Australia’s coastline suburbs such as Cronulla, Wollongong, Bondi and Sydney’s Northern Beaches are definitely some of the most beautiful places you can call home. But when it comes to designing your home, there are a few considerations particularly in regards to your cabinetry choices. To handle or not to handle?…this is the question. One of the perils of living so close to the ocean is the rust factor. If the correct materials are not selected, your brand new kitchen will rust in no time.

Handleless kitchen cabinets are one solution. Handleless kitchens are modern and on-trend, with their streamlined looks. A handleless kitchen can be achieved in a variety of ways. One of the more popular designs is the “shark nose” drawer, where the top of the drawer front is cut at an angle and there is a gap between each drawer front allowing you fit your fingers in to pull open the drawer. To achieve this look, drawers and cupboards are made with MDF board and painted with polyurethane. Top cupboards can be made with an overhang so that they are opened from the bottom, negating the need for a handle.
Similarly to the shark nose, drawers can be routed in various ways to create a handle effect. This look is often present in industrial or Scandinavian style kitchens, which again are on-trend at present.
Another way of achieving the handleless look is by using Blum Servo-Drive which is an electronic drawer opening system. Drawers and overhead cupboards automatically open with a touch of the hand. Servo-Drive achieves minimalistic, sophisticated look with clean sleek lines as drawers sit flush with no finger gaps between the drawers as per the shark-nose look. Any suitable material can be used for cupboard and drawer fronts when using Blum Servo-Drive. Blum
After a discussion with the friendly staff at Kethy, our handle supplier, their recommendation for coastal areas was a Stainless Steel handle, however advised that Stainless Steel does require maintenance. Information regarding Stainless Steel Care can be found on the Kethy website Kethy They also said that in extreme conditions a 316 marine grade Stainless Steel handle would be suitable.
While push to close “tip-on” tabs are practical on items such as TV units, they are not ideal for use throughout a kitchen.
